New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said recently acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin hasn’t been a problem in the locker room, as he’s been rumored to be on previous teams.

The New York Jets may have all the intrigue of a dumpster fire this season, but there’s been a silver lining. The team got talented receiver Percy Harvin for really cheap. While Harvin has always been rumored to be a problem child in locker rooms, coach Rex Ryan refuted that talk, lauding Harvin’s work with the team.

“The guy has been phenomenal here,” Ryan said on Thursday, per Pro Football Talk.  “He has been absolutely terrific.  How he was managed by other clubs, that is not fair for me [to say], because I don’t know, and for me to say that, ‘Oh, they handled him poorly and look how great we are doing with him.’  That is not it.  The young man has been absolutely terrific here.  I will say that about him.”

That’s likely not what they’d say in Seattle or Minnesota, but those teams are in the past for Harvin. He’s in New York now and he’s appreciated there. As Ryan noted, Harvin was one of the main targets in his first NFL draft as head coach of the Jets.

“I thought he would do well here,” Ryan said of Harvin.  “That was based on all of that work that we had done leading up to the draft.  You might recall that was my first year here, so that would have been my first draft pick.  Really it was either [Mark] Sanchez or Percy.”

Harvin has 25 receptions for 306 yards and a receiving touchdown along with 99 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown since the Jets traded for him. He will average a hair more than $10 million against the cap for the next four seasons, which will likely be a greater determinant of his next stop, if the Jets decline to keep him around, than anything else.
