The breakout season that was supposed to happen this year never came to fruition for Denver Broncos running back Montee Ball who was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Saturday.

Montee Ball has his season end prematurely as the Denver Broncos placed the second-year running back on injured reserve on Saturday after dealing with a groin injury.

The former Wisconsin running back who set the FBS record for career touchdowns was supposed to fill the void left by Knowshon Moreno leaving the team in free agency in the offseason but the former Badger and second round pick didn’t live up to those expectations as he was a disappointment before injury ended his season early.

Ball only played in five games this year with 55 carries for 172 yards for a 3.1 yards per carry average and one rushing touchdown.

He ran for 559 yards on 4.7 yards per carry last year in a reserve role to Moreno as a rookie, but couldn’t handle the featured back responsibilities and has seen C.J. Anderson emerge from relative obscurity to lead the team in rushing and Ronnie Hillman and Juwan Thompson fare better than Ball in their opportunities to carry the rock.

This year can be chalked up as a lost one for Ball who will look to regain his health in time for the Broncos offseason programs with the hopes of earning his starting running back job back from Anderson and fulfill those expectations that were placed on him after a productive college career and promising rookie season.
