The Notorious B.I.G. once rapped “It Was All A Dream” but don’t tell that to the Batman as Christian Bale was asked for his thoughts on the final scene in final film in the Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

In the final scene we see Bale as Bruce Wayne with Selina Kyle played by Anne Hathaway at a cafe seemingly retired from their careers as Batman and Catwoman when Alfred sits down a few tables away and meets eyes with Wayne to give the movie the happy ending and satisfying the hopes and dreams of Alfred we heard earlier in the movie.

With such a happy ending is it possible that it was all a dream from Alfred and director Christopher Nolan left the ending open to interpretation like he has done before, most famously with Inception or even his latest hit Interstellar?

Bale doesn’t think it was a dream at all.

“My personal opinion is that no, it was not a dream, that that was for real,” Bale told EW.

The thought of this even being a dream never entered into my brain until hearing the interview with EW, but I can understand how viewers would wonder if it indeed happened or if this was Nolan pulling another fast one on the audience and leaving it up to our own interpretation like the incredible ending in Inception.

You can listen to the entire interview with Batman, I mean Bale right here.

What do you think about the ending to The Dark Knight Rises? Did what we see in the final seconds actually happen or do you think that was Nolan taking us inside the head and dreams of Alfred played brilliantly by Michael Caine?
