Trevor Knight exploded onto the college football scene with a four-touchdown performance in a win in last year’s Sugar Bowl against Alabama and the Sooners’ quarterback will have a chance to show he’s a big-game performer once again in the Russell Athletic Bowl after missing the previous three games with transient quadriplegia suffered in the loss to Baylor.
Knight was replaced by Cody Thomas in the starting lineup and the team’s passing attack disappeared without Knight under center, averaging fewer than 100 yards per game and going 2-1, although the loss was in the Bedlam Series against in-state rival Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma hopes Knight will be able to provide a spark to the slumping passing offense after throwing for 2,197 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine games prior to suffering the scary looking neck injury late in the loss against the Bears.
Clemson has one of the better defenses in the nation so it won’t come easy, but he should provide some balance to the running game that features freshman phenom Samaje Perine who set the FBS record for rushing yards in a game earlier this year and keep the Tigers front seven from stacking the box and putting eight and nine defenders in the box to slow down Perine.
Knight has an 11-3 record as the team’s starter and looks to improve to 12-3 on Dec. 29 from the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL.
