After 14 years at Missouri, including the last six as the team’s defensive coordinator and the last three as the associate head coach, Dave Steckel is leaving to become the head coach at Missouri State, according to Springfield News Leader and will be introduced at a 5 p.m. press conference on Sunday.

Steckel was named one of five finalists for the Broyles Award given annually to the nation’s top assistant coaches after coaching Missouri’s defense to the No. 26 scoring defense and No. 23 total defense in the nation, respectively, after Missouri won the SEC east for a second straight season. During SEC play, Steckel’s defenses were No. 1 in total defense and rush defense and No. 2 in the toughest conference in the nation in pass defense and scoring defense.

He has developed a number of great linebackers and defensive linemen during his career, including recent notables like Michael Sam, Kony Ealy, Shane Ray, Markus Golden and Sean Witherspoon. In total the former linebackers coach has produced 22 all-conference linebackers in his career. Further, he oversaw the recruitment of legendary Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel.

This will be Steckel’s first head coaching opportunity and he replaces Terry Allen who did not have his contract renewed after a 4-8 season.

With Steckel leaving to take a head coaching job one possible, even likely, replacement for him would be Craig Kuligowski who could be promoted from his defensive line position he has held the last 19 years at Missouri and has worked under Pinkel for 23 years.
