Coyotes backup Devan Dubnyk robs Wild captain Mikko Koivu to help renew his team’s faith in the season

The Arizona Coyotes and backup netminder Devan Dubnyk came closer to winning a game Saturday night than they have since December 1st, falling in the OT shootout to the Minnesota Wild when rookie Tobias Rieder missed his first-ever shootout attempt.

The Coyotes certainly have plenty to be happy about from this game — three goals by players who desperately needed them, a point to help them pull just the tiniest bit up in the standings — but maybe the proudest moment of the game came from netminder Devan Dubnyk‘s amazing save early on in the overtime period.

The Wild sent in captain Mikko Koivu against Dubnyk in the shootout to win it; with only one missed shot all season on the shootout, putting Koivu in seemed like a good way to give the Wild a guaranteed victory.

Edmtonton’s first-round pick let this one by, but few will remember Koivu’s game winner — too many are busy remembering the way Dubnyk stopped the puck early on in the final five-minute play period.

I’m still re-watching the replay, trying to figure out how Dubnyk managed to stop that before more or less face-planting on the puck to keep it from slipping in behind him.

In any case, the Wild still won the game — but with a morale issue in Arizona attributing to some seriously lackluster play in recent games, it goes without saying that Dubnyk did everything he was supposed to for his new team. When they face off against the Oilers again this Tuesday, it seems like this struggling franchise will have the morale to take home a fourth win against this season’s cellar-dwellers.
