No one was particularly shocked on Monday, when St. Louis Blues captain David Backes left the game after taking a slapshot to the face.
It was after the game, though, when his interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch truly told us how serious the blocked shot was — and reminded all of us why hockey is still one of the most dangerous sports in the world.
In his interview, Backes described the pain as feeling like his ‘face was going to fall off’. I can’t even imagine that, and it’s freaking me out just thinking about it. He then went directly to the locker room, where they gave him some painkillers and ultimately tried to help him feel less like death until he was able to go get it taken care of.
Apparently, the shot pretty much ruined his natural set of teeth — and while most of them have been more or less rebuilt, that’s only a ‘temporary fix’ so he can eat.
Uh.
I get laughed at for thinking that my goaltending position is the safest one, but at least my mask has something protecting my neck and my full set of teeth. The defensemen who don’t mind taking pucks to the face to win games? Those are the crazy ones.
