The Carolina Panthers are optimistic that Cam Newton will play in the Week 16 after missing today’s NFL action following his car crash this week.

More from Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton will miss today’s game for the Carolina Panthers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following his car crash earlier this week. He is dealing with two small fractures in his back, very similar to the injury that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered earlier this season.

That being said, the Panthers are optimistic that Newton will be good to go next week against the Cleveland Browns. Surprisingly enough, the Panthers still have a chance to make a run at the NFL playoffs this season. They are sitting at 4-8 on the season, while both the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are tied for the division lead at 5-8.

Newton has had an up-and-down season so far this year due to the lack of weapons that he has. The Panthers allowed almost all of his top targets to walk away this past offseason, and only brought in Kelvin Benjamin to help replace that production that was lost.

Despite the struggles that he has had this season, he has still shown flashes of being the quarterback from last season. He has the potential to lead the Panthers to the next step and into playoff contention, but they have to surround him with talent. Benjamin is a good start, but they could use a legitimate running game and more talent at the wide receiver position.

If Carolina could win the next two weeks, they could very well have a game against the Atlanta Falcons in the last game of the year that would decide the division winner. Newton is a great leader, and he’ll need to take his team and lead them to victory over the Browns next week if the Panthers can come up with a big win today.
