The San Francisco 49ers’ nightmare of a season will end without a trip to the NFL playoffs.

Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers were the preseason pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl by quite a few fans, and now they will officially miss the playoffs after what ended up being a nightmare season.

It’s crazy how fast things can go from good to bad, and that was the case this season for the 49ers. Things went bad from the beginning of the season and they never turned around. Whether those things were health, attitudes, rumors, or unrest, things never got back to being healthy throughout the entire 49ers’ franchise.

Now, the 49ers are looking at a lot of potential changes in the organization this coming offseason. Many don’t expect to see Harbaugh back as the head coach next season, which would be a major shakeup.

Health was a problem from the get go with players like Navorro Bowman sitting out from an injury last year. Other key players like Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, and Glenn Dorsey have all missed time with injuries as well. It has been a very frustrating season, and the 49ers will end it watching the playoffs from the comfort of their own couches or on vacation.

Needless to say, this was exactly what the 49ers didn’t want to happen. They were finally having success each and every season, but now this collapse is going to bump them back a step. Finding a head coach that does as good with the team as Harbaugh has done isn’t going to be easy at all.

Coming up this short is going to be something that sticks in the back of each and every member of the 49ers’ organization for an entire offseason. They had the talent to make a run at the Super Bowl this season, but to not even make the playoffs is completely inexcusable.

Colin Kaepernick looked extremely inconsistent all season long, and Harbaugh did have some flaws as far as using the running game too little. The defense’s injuries were too much to overcome, and the offense wasn’t consistent enough to make up for it. There are some good reasons for the struggles that they had, but they are all extremely depressing.

All of that being said, this was an incredibly bad nightmare of a season for the 49ers. They will be looking to make a lot of changes this coming offseason, and you can expect to see a much different roster and coaching staff. It’s going to be very interesting to keep an eye on them starting in just a few weeks, as rumors will begin flying around about their future immediately following the close of the regular season.
