Sammie Coates was Auburn’s second-leading receiver this season and one of the team’s biggest weapons in the passing game. Now the news is out that he will turn pro, according to a story by Pro Football Talk.
Coates should be targeted by plenty of NFL teams entering the draft. Predictions say that he could easily go in the first round, but certainly no later than the third. Rotoworld‘s scouting report on Coates says he needs refinement, despite being fast and a great vertical receiver.
"“Coates wins as a vertical receiver, using outstanding speed to get downfield and take the top off coverages. He can be inconsistent at the catch point, specifically high pointing, but he has made some ridiculous acrobatic highlights. Coates will test like a phenom at the Combine, but needs plenty of refinement.”"
Coates had 717 receiving yards for Auburn, not far behind his teammate and team leader D’haquille Williams, who had 730 yards. Coates also had four touchdowns, tying him for second on the team. For his career with Auburn, Coates had 1,733 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.
Williams is also considering heading for the NFL draft and ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper had this to say about the two Auburn receivers:
"“I think they’re both similar in terms of where they’ll go, maybe late one but probably early to mid two. But like I said with strong workouts, I think you saw all these receivers this year do a great job, some were major bargains. That could be the case with these two if they drop into the second round with late first not remote, but a possibility.” (via 247 Sports)"
Coates graduated early from Auburn on Saturday and will play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama in January.
