New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called it ‘tough you-know-what’ when asked how fans wanting the top pick in the draft should feel after the Jets won their third game of the season.

The New York Jets did just about the worst thing they could have done for the sake of their franchise’s short-term future. Instead of losing like they have all year, they beat the host Tennessee Titans and as a result effectively ruled themselves out of the running for the top overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The team’s response? Those aren’t real fans.

“Tough you-know-what,” coach Rex Ryan said, per ESPN, when asked about the draft ramifications of the team’s ugly 16-11 victory at Tennessee. “A real Jets fan wants to win. It doesn’t matter what pick you get or whatever. If it were Peyton Manning out there, I could understand it, but I don’t think Peyton Manning is out there.”

In fairness, Ryan hasn’t been around this franchise as long as a real Jets fan. A real Jets fan has eaten more crap this team than Ryan or any of his players ever have or ever will. That hasn’t stopped players and coaches alike from ripping into fans who would rather emphatically lose than just lose enough to become irrelevant.

“They’re not fans, bro,” DT Sheldon Richardson said when asked a similar question. “They’re not my fans, so stop saying that.”

Well, Sheldon, you’ll have to forgive these fans for bristling when someone scolds them for simply wanting the best player possible. After all, the fans aren’t the ones who floundered at 2-11 to start Week 15, but they’ll be the ones left to deal with the ensuing mess (without a franchise QB) long after Ryan and the most of this roster have been whisked out of town.
