Percy Harvin has been pretty public in his liking of the Jets and their locker room culture, and the team and current coach Rex Ryan have likewise been effusive about his presence and dedication. However, Rex Ryan is unlikely to be the coach next year and Percy Harvin is unlikely to take a pay cut to stay with the Jets.
A few factors play into whether Harvin will stay with the Jets or not. If the Jets have Harvin on their roster at the start of the league year in 2015, they will have to give the Seattle Seahawks a fourth-round pick instead of the original sixth-round pick. Obviously where the Jets are finishing this year, that fourth round pick could be pretty decent. If the Jets cut or trade Harvin, they won’t be on the line for any of his salary since it includes no guaranteed money.
"Harvin has four years remaining on a blockbuster $64.25 million extension that includes non-guaranteed base salaries of $10.5 million, $9.9 million, $9.95 million and $11.15 million through 2018. (via NY Daily News)"
The other factor is that Harvin is still unlikely to get that money on the open market or from a Jets trade partner. However, what he could get elsewhere is a better quarterback situation. Despite showing up in a few games with his explosive talent, Harvin has often been reduced to a non-factor due to shoddy quarterback play.
Essentially, Harvin probably will take less to play for a better quarterback, he’ll have to, but if he stays with the Jets, he’s putting himself in a situation where winning games or even reliably getting the ball might be few and far between.
As for the Jets, do they want to see Harvin make plays in a better system somewhere else? Like the New England Patriots, as Pro Football Talk notes.
That’s the question the Jets will have to ask themselves come the offseason…which is coming quickly for them.
