The Green Bay Packers have yet to lock up a playoff spot, but they’ve already named their postseason captains.

At 10-4, the Green Bay Packers are a strong bet to make the NFL’s postseason. However, with a number of talented teams in the NFC with nine and 10 wins at the moment, the Packers still need to win their final two games to guarantee themselves of a playoff berth.

So, in a way, Green Bay is playing postseason football going forward, needing to win these next two weeks or risk going home. That’s at least how the Packers are viewing the rest of the regular season, as evidenced by their decision to name playoff captains on Wednesday.

Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson to ESPN:

"“It’s almost playoff time, but for us it kind of is,” Nelson said Wednesday. “We need to win these games to get into the playoffs and start playing good football. Just trying to be proactive and just making sure guys step up and be those leaders.”"

It’s an interesting move by the Packers, one that Aaron Rodgers says has only heightened the importance of the next two games.

"“This just ups the urgency,” Rodgers said. “Some teams do captains all year long and have the ‘C’ on their jersey. I think that’s a good idea too. Mike has mixed it up over the years. And this year, we’re kind of starting a little early.”"

It’s hard to imagine this decision actually having an effect on how the Packers play these next two games, but hey, if they believe in its power, good for them.

Green Bay will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday before taking on the Detroit Lions in Week 17.
