At age 86, Gordie Howe continues to show the same toughness that made him an NHL living legend.
Despite a series of strokes, Howe has made incredible progress, as his son Marty announced that his father is now walking under his own power while he recovers as his daughter’s home in Texas. Considering that Howe bordered near death last month, the news is remarkable.
Howe’s recovery has improved to the point to where he will appear at the Kinsman Sports Celebrity Dinner, which will be held on February 6 in Saskatoon, Sask. in what is being billed as the final public appearance for the league’s third all-time leading scorer.
What will make the dinner more interesting is that Howe will not be the most prolific scorer in the room. Wayne Gretzky is scheduled to be the keynote speaker that night.
For those unfamiliar with Howe (you certainly cannot call yourself a hockey fan if you’re not): he played 26 seasons in the NHL and six in the defunct WHL from 1946-1980, playing mostly with the Detroit Red Wings (1946-1971) and the Houston Aeros (1973-1977). Howe’s last on-ice appearance came in 1998, when he played one game with the IHL’s Detroit Vipers.
