The San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a three-way deal which features Rays outfielder Wil Myers as the focal point of the transaction.

Myers, the 2013 American League Rookie of the year, batted just .222 with six homers and 35 RBI in 87 games with the Rays last season, will head to the Padres, as San Diego continued its offseason upgrade of the majors’ worst offense in 2014. Myers was plagued by a wrist injury that limited his production and makes him a risky gamble for the Pads. San Diego also added pitchers Geraldo Reyes and Jose Castillo from Tampa Bay along with veteran catcher Ryan Hanigan,

In the midst of their offseason firesale, the Rays will gain catcher Rene Rivera, pitcher Burch Smith and power hitting first base prospect Jake Bauers from the Padres. The Nationals sent outfielder Steven Souza and pitcher Travis Ott to Tampa Bay.

The Nationals, who acted as the middleman in the deal, will receive pitcher Joe Ross and shortstop Trea Turner. Washington will also get the coveted prize of a player to be named later.

Myers is the latest piece of the Padres’ offensive overhaul, as the team acquired former All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers during last week’s winter meetings. The departure of Myers continues an exodus of talent from Tampa Bay, which also dealt outfielder Matt Joyce on Monday to the Los Angeles Angels.
