The Carolina Panthers, just a little over a week after he was involved in an automobile accident, could have their franchise quarterback back on the field this Sunday, as head coach Ron Rivera indicated on Thursday that Cam Newton could be ready to go.
Rivera broke the news while talking to reporters on Thursday afternoon.
Newton has been back on the practice field this week and everything seemed to be going smoothly.
Nine days ago Newton was involved in a car accident while he was on his way to the stadium for practice that left him with fractures in his lower back. He did not play last week, but he stepped back on the practice field throughout the course of the past few days and everything seems A-OK.
Newton, speaking to reporters recently, noted that he would not jeopardize the team by stepping back onto the field before he was ready.
“If I can play, we all know I want to play,” Newton said via ESPN.com. “But that the end of the day I won’t jeopardize what we have the opportunity to do just because of my selfishness to say, ‘Oooh. I’m a tough man.'”
Cam and the Panthers will be taking on the Cleveland Browns this Sunday at home, with chances for an NFC South title still in front of them.
