Devils Lose Damon Severson For 4-5 Weeks With Ankle Injury
New Jersey Devils rookie defenseman Damon Severson will miss about 4-5 weeks due to an ankle injury.
The injury bug is absolutely relentless with the New Jersey Devils this season.
The team reported Thursday that rookie defenseman Damon Severson will be out approximately 4-5 weeks with a hairline fracture in his ankle. Severson sustained the injury back on Dec. 6 in a game against the Washington Capitals after he blocked a shot and has been playing through the injury. He even took pregame warmups with the team before Wednesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators before becoming a late scratch.
The team sent him for x-rays after he was scratched. The results revealed the hairline fracture in his ankle. No surgery is required, just time to heal. Of which, the Devils don’t really have.
The Devils currently sit with an 11-16-6 record, putting them 7 points out of a wild card spot. 7 points doesn’t seem that bad, but it is when you’ve played up to 4 more games than the teams that are directly above you in the standings.

Severson has been a tremendous player for the Devils this season. The 20 year old was able to crack a roster spot at the beginning of the year and he never let go of it. His demeanor is that of a veterans, as he is always so calm and poised in his play. He’s been able to contribute offensively as well, registering 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points through 32 games this season.
The Devils just can’t seem to stay healthy his year. Every time they get a player back from injury, one more seems to go down. The Devils just got Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias back, but Mike Cammalleri (lower body) and Dainus Zubrus (leg laceration) remain out. Zubrus was just placed on injured reserve today to clear up a roster spot before the holiday roster freeze. Adam Larsson looks like he is set to return soon as well after he was dealing with the mumps.
If the Devils have any hopes of coming back and making the playoffs this season, they are going to need a fully healthy roster to do so.
