Gordie Howe is ‘back on his ball game’, says son Mark

The NHL has very few players remaining that entire generations of fans can all look back on fondly, but Gordie Howe is certainly one of them.

The only player in NHL history to play over the span of five separate decades, ‘Mr. Hockey’ is easily the most beloved player in the game — so when Howe suffered a series of strokes this October, the entire league felt it.

Things seemed fairly touch-and-go for a while; in a recent interview with MLive’s Ansar Khan, Gordie’s son Mark admitted that the family didn’t know if the legend would even be around come Christmastime. Each successive stroke left him farther behind in the recovery process, with the younger Howe revealing in one interview that they were simply trying to keep Gordie comfortable after a certain point.

Fast forward two months, though, and Mark has opened up to the public with the news that his father is doing better than he has in ages — in his interview, Khan even reported that Howe was walking of his own power. Many who had been following the news of Gordie’s health since October would agree — that seems like it’s almost too good to be true.

Mark revealed that the family doesn’t know where things will head from here, but seemed encouraged by the way his father’s health has been improving so rapidly over the past week. The report he gave Khan, released on Wednesday, was the first positive news the public had heard about Gordie since the first stroke.

Gordie Howe is 86, but the thousands of fans he has across the league (and across multiple generations and NHL eras) remain as optimistic as his family — we aren’t ready to let go of Mr. Hockey just yet.
