Report: Matt Kemp To San Diego Padres A Done Deal … Finally
By Phil Watson
After reports that his physical was scaring off the San Diego Padres, it appears the Matt Kemp trade is going to happen a week after it was first announced.
It took a week and some wrangling and it may mean that the next trade between the two NL West rivals may not happen for another 10 years, but Matt Kemp is reportedly joining the San Diego Padres after all.
A USA Today report Thursday said the deal—announced at the end of the winter meetings last week—to send Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz from the Los Angeles Dodgers to San Diego in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitchers Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin could be in jeopardy after Kemp’s physical revealed severe arthritis in both hips.
But ESPN.com reported later Thursday that the deal will be completed as planned, even if there is some ill will between the Dodgers and San Diego general manager A.J. Preller over the details of the physical being leaked.

L.A. is also sending $32 million to the Padres to cover some of the $107 still due Kemp over the next five seasons.
Kemp is coming off his healthiest season since 2011, having played in 150 games in 2014 with a .287/.346/.506 slash line to go with 25 homers and 89 RBI.
The Padres also acquired former Rookie of the Year Wil Myers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday and Thursday night, reports were circulating that the Oakland Athletics had traded All-Star catcher Derek Norris to San Diego.
According to baseball-reference.com, this was just the fourth trade between the Dodgers and Padres in San Diego’s history.
The Padres joined the National League as an expansion team in 1969 and in April of that year, the Dodgers made a minor deal, sending right-hander Al McBean to L.A. for infielder Tommy Dean and right-hander Leon Everitt.
The teams didn’t make another deal until July 1998, when the Padres picked up right-handed reliever Jim Bruske from the Dodgers for a minor-league right-hander named Widd Workman.
In August 2008, the Dodgers acquired right-hander Greg Maddux from San Diego for two players to be named later, who turned out to be two minor-league pitchers who never reached the show.
