The San Diego Padres’ offseason quest for fire(power) continued Thursday as they acquired All-Star catcher Derek Norris from the Oakland Athletics.

San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller is seriously putting his own stamp on the team he took over in August.

On the same day the long-delayed trade to acquire Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers was finally completed, Preller swung a deal to bring in another bat on Thursday, picking All-Star catcher Derek Norris from the Oakland Athletics.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News had the first rumblings:

Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan followed up with the details:

The Padres have now added Kemp and Wil Myers to the outfield and have replaced Yasmani Grandal—who went to Los Angeles in the Kemp trade—with Norris.

Norris hit .270/.361/.403 last season in a career-high 127 games, with 10 home runs and 55 RBI, and earned his first All-Star Game invitation. And he only turns 26 on Valentine’s Day.

San Diego also got minor-league left-hander Seth Streich and an international signing slot in the deal. Streich, who will be 24 in February, was 9-6 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.158 WHIP in 22 starts and 114 innings at Advanced-A Stockton in 2014. He was a sixth-round pick out of Ohio University in 2012.

The A’s get back right-handers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez.

Hahn, 25, was called up in June by the Padres from Double-A San Antonio and was 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.214 WHIP in 14 appearances, 12 of them starts, and 73.1 innings.

Alvarez, 23, made 10 relief appearances with the Padres in September after he was acquired in the deal that sent closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels in July. He allowed one earned run on three hits in eight innings.

With Oakland also shipping out Josh Donaldson and losing Jon Lester in free agency, it appears it’s rebuilding time by the Bay. San Diego, meanwhile, is acting like it wants to make up ground on the San Francisco Giants and the Dodgers in the NL West.
