Chicago Bears: Who Will Start At Quarterback in 2015?
Brian Hoyer
Hoyer started 13 games for the Cleveland Browns this year and had them rolling in the right direction early. But he hit a wall as the year wore on and Cleveland turned the offense over the rookie Johnny Manziel. Hoyer will be a free agent this offseason and is sure to find some suitors. He is a guy with 31 games-worth of NFL experience and is only 29 years old.
The Bears could add Hoyer as a steady veteran presence for a year until they figure out what to do long-term. The 2015 NFL Draft has a very weak quarterback class and I’m not sure the Bears are ready to dive into full rebuilding mode with the players they currently have on offense.
While operating without top targets Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron for most of the season, Hoyer completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 3,192 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. But eight of those interceptions came in his final four starts and he only threw one touchdown in that stretch. Through nine games he had 10 touchdowns and just four interceptions. That’s not bad.
Hoyer was very efficient early in the season and that came while constantly looking over his shoulder at Manziel. When things went bad for the Michigan State product, I believe he began forcing things in an attempt to keep his job. It didn’t work out well.
While the Houston Texans are sure to make a push to reunite Hoyer with his old offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, I think the Bears could snag him if they guarantee him the keys to the franchise for at least one season.
Hoyer is a solid, steady quarterback with a decent amount of experience. There is a good chance he could at least be above average if the Bears give him a chance.
