ESPN Did Mischaracterize Testimony From Rice Case

Last week, the NFL said ESPN distorted the Ray Rice testimony and now a document shows that they were correct.

The NFL took issue with ESPN’s assertion last week that Commissioner Roger Goodell informed team owners via email that the Ray Rice video had been requested from the police a day before the league’s lead investigator informed Security Chief Jeff Miller that no request had been made. It was one of a few allegations ESPN brought up from the Ray Rice testimony.

According to Pro Football Talk, who obtained a copy of the email, the NFL was in the right on this one.

"In the email in question, the NFL’s lead investigator does not say “I never contacted anyone about the tape.”  That quote comes from a question posed to NFL V.P. of security Jeff Miller at the Rice appeal hearing.  The NFL’s lawyer objected to the characterization of the e-mail, and hearing officer Barbara S. Jones said, “I can read them.”"

That makes it look like no one from ESPN read the email, and makes it fairly obvious that the assertion in the report was based on Rice’s lawyer’s mischaracterization of the evidence. ESPN is so far standing behind its reporting and Pro Football Talk attempted to get ESPN to release the transcript, which they declined to do.

At this point, ESPN is looking pretty bad and should come out and admit that they at least got that part of their report wrong. It looks worse that they tried to avoid this eventual revealing by denying the transcript to PFT. Do they really want the NFL mad at them for good reason? Do we really want to see Monday night Jaguars vs Titans matchups all next season?

Come on, ESPN.
