Are you looking for the fantasy basketball trade analysis of Rajon Rondo to the Mavericks? We’ve got the fantasy part right here!
Mavericks Analysis
We have all the fantasy basketball trade analysis right here at Fantasy CPR. This deal will obviously kill almost all the value of any PG not named Rajon Rondo. If you were waiting around on Raymond Felton or had hopes for Devin Harris, it is now time to face the reality. I do not really expect things to be much different for Rondo as far as scoring. If anything, he could take a pretty good hit in the scoring department. Rondo has not had tremendous value in cats leagues this year, but I do think that after they develop some chemistry, that his numbers stand to improve substantially.

I have seen some reports out there that state that Rondo will have to relinquish some ball handling responsibilities, but personally I think that could be over exaggerated some. Rondo is not a player that will excel or be at his best working off the ball. If that is the case, then I do not see this as a deal that will help anyone in Dallas either fantasy wise or the Mavericks as a team. For me, the best way everyone, including fantasy owners, benefits is with Rondo as the primary facilitator role. The Mavericks need him setting up guys like Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons and Monta Ellis. All of those guys could stand to profit from Rondo’s ability to break down the defense and initiate offense.
In the end, as with any trade in the NBA, it will boil down to how well the Mavericks can adjust to Rondo and his game and play to his strengths. If nothing else, we know that Rondo will bring a gritty, tough attitude and a spunk that not many NBA point guards possess. My opinion is in the early days this could look pretty bad and create a pretty solid buy-low opportunity on all four of the Mavericks primary fantasy players. Look for frustrated owners of Parsons, Ellis and Nowitzki. This will likely only stand to escalate Tysons Chandler’s value as he could benefit from the extra rebounds Rondo’s inability to shoot could create. I think that at the end of the day the Mavericks will be a better basketball team, and if the players are used correctly, they should all stand to get a slight bump in value after seeing an early decline while they learn how to play together. Be ready to jump on the buy-low window when this happens.

Celtics Analysis
Other than racking up draft picks for the future, the hope here is that Danny Ainge will now be making room for the young and talented rookie guard Marcus Smart to begin developing into the future PG of the Celtics. From a fantasy standpoint, my guess is that long-term there will be a timeshare with Smart and incoming Jammer Nelson, That will likely lead to neither guy being a great play in standard sized leagues. Smart, however, saw his dynasty and keeper league stock shoot through the roof with this news. Of course from a realistic standpoint,t Jameer Nelson stands to miss a decent amount of time with nagging injuries, so Smart would make a nice speculative add in all leagues.
Another player for the Celtics who could see a nice bump would be Jeff Green. Green could see some of the ball handling responsibilities come his way as a result of Rondo’s departure. Avery Bradley is also a player who could see a short-term bump in minutes and shots, and even Phil Pressey could be a nice add in 20 team or larger leagues.
This could hurt some of the development and stats for the big men like Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk. Tyler Zeller will also likely see a reduction in role, if not a complete reduction with the incoming Brandan Wright. Jae Crowder could also carve out a nice role, potentially putting a dent in Evan Turner’s already low value.
So for the Celtics, I would buy Marcus Smart and Jeff Green, and try to hold tight and see what happens to everyone else. As I always suggest scouring the real game box scores are a nightly-must check for any serious fantasy baller. There is no substitute for actually watching the games, but if you can’t watch them, at least tune in and catch the minutes distribution and the major categories.
