Rajon Rondo’s time with the Boston Celtics finally came to a close on Thursday, as the team dealt him away to the Dallas Mavericks in a multi-player deal.
The Celtics trading of Rondo has been long overdue, and it turns out it’s something that Rondo grew to want, according to former teammate and current Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins.
It’s completely understandable that Rondo would want to leave the Celtics. Boston is in the midst of a rebuild are a long ways away from competing for a championship. After winning just 25 games last season, the Celtics have started out this year 9-14. Rondo, at 28, having already experienced championship success in his past, surely didn’t enjoy being on such a mediocre Celtics team.
Instead, Rondo will head to the Mavericks, where he will have a chance to win basketball’s ultimate prize. The Mavericks have a 19-8 record and now boast a starting lineup that features Rondo, Monta Ellis, Chandler Parsons, Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler. The Mavs obviously can offer a much better situation for Rondo than he had in Boston.
Rondo had an outstanding eight-plus years stretch with the Celtics, but this was the right time for the partnership to end.
