The Dallas Mavericks traded for point guard Rajon Rondo Thursday and there’s plenty of reason to believe the point guard will remain a Maverick for years to come.
First of all, the Mavericks wouldn’t have likely made such a move without assurances that Rondo was likely to re-sign with the team once his current contract expires this season.
There is also the following, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon:
However, that won’t stop other teams from making a run at Rondo this summer. One of those teams: the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Grantland’s Zach Lowe.
"The Lakers can try to sign Rondo this summer, which is why they were planning to cap their offer at Steve Nash, the Houston first-round pick they got with Jeremy Lin (likely to be in the mid-20s), and a second-rounder, per sources familiar with the matter."
Sure, the Lakers are going to give it a shot, but don’t expect this story end with Rondo in Los Angeles. It would be truly stunning to see Rondo leave a great, contending situation in Dallas to sign with the Lakers, who are currently one of the worst teams in the league.
But, given the state of the Lakers, it’s hard to fault them for still planning to pursue Rondo.
