The Dallas Mavericks made the biggest move of the 2014-15 NBA season on Thursday, trading with the Boston Celtics to acquire guard Rajon Rondo.
However, the Mavericks weren’t the only team to make a push for the polarizing point guard. Four other teams spoke with the Celtics about Rondo, according to SI’s Chris Mannix.
Still, it appears the Mavericks were viewed as the clear front-runner to land Rondo in the hours leading up to the eventual move.
The Mavs ultimately sent Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson and draft picks to Boston for Rondo and Dwight Powell. Considering many viewed the Mavericks’ package to the Celtics as fairly weak, one has to figure that the competing teams weren’t offering much themselves.
With the Sacramento Kings, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers all having no shot at competing for a title, only perhaps the Houston Rockets would have made sense as another possible destination for Rondo. A Big Three featuring Rondo, Dwight Howard and James Harden would undoubtedly be extremely formidable.
Instead, the Mavs will feature one of the best starting lineups in the league with Rondo, Monta Ellis, Chandler Parsons, Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler.
Rondo will make his Mavericks debut Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.
