Cam Fowler was taken out of the play after running into the referee, the result was a goal for Ottawa.

It was just one of those nights for the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks were coming off a tough 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens Thursday night, then had to travel to play the Ottawa Senators last night. It was also their last game of a five game road trip through Canada. Needless to say, the Ducks were running on fumes and this wasn’t going to end well for them.

It ended horribly, as they fell to the Senators by a score of 6-2.

More from Anaheim Ducks

It was a closer game than the score indicates though, as it was only 2-0 Senators late in the second period. That is, however, until Kyle Turris put together a tremendous individual effort and highlight-reel goal for the eventual game winner and to put the Senators up 3-0. It got out of hand real quick after that.

The Turris goal seemed to be the back-breaker for the Ducks. Despite Ducks’ captain Ryan Getzlaf’s best efforts with adding two tallies of his own, his team just didn’t have any gas left in the tank. They sure didn’t have luck on their side either.

When the score was 4-2, the Senators were advancing with the puck through the neutral zone.

It seems like everything was under control, until the referee decided to show off his best Niklas Kronwall impression on Cam Fowler. The referee skates right into Fowler’s path and takes him out.

As you can see in the GIF right here, the result of the referee’s body check was a 5-2 lead for the Ottawa Senators. Fowler was obviously not impressed with the hit, but I sure was. That’s not a bad hit at all.

While I’m sure this was very frustrating for the Ducks and their fans, they just need to shake it off and look towards next game. While this play basically put the nail in the coffin of the Ducks, the game was most likely over before this goal.

One thing is for sure, that ref won’t be on Cam Fowler’s Christmas card list.
