San Francisco 49ers‘ running back Frank Gore has cleared the league’s concussion protocol and will play against the San Diego Chargers as week 16 of the NFL season gets underway on Saturday night.

There might be only be two games left in the Frank Gore era in San Francisco. That means there are only two more opportunities for the 49ers to not use him between now and the end of the season.

Gore entered week 16 as a question mark for the 49ers because of a concussion. With Carlos Hyde already out for San Francisco, that meant that the team might be down its top two running backs for a game in which they can do little more than play spoiler against the Chargers.

There must be some relief, then, that the 49ers will have Gore available…even if they will probably just use him in pass protection while Colin Kaepernick fires errant throws over people’s heads from the pocket.

Ian Rapoport reports that Gore will play on Saturday night for the 49ers.

Gore has 804 yards rushing and just three rushing touchdowns this season. He is averaging an underwhelming 3.9 yards per carry as the 49ers have struggled to get their offense going at all this season.

It will be strange to see Frank Gore in another uniform, but that is likely what will happen next season.
