No stranger to legal proceedings, former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis showed his support for Michael Phelps by attending his court session on Friday as he was sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation for driving under the influence. Lewis sat with Phelps’ mother, Debbie, in a wooden bench row as Phelps waited for his turn in the Baltimore City District Court.
It’s not the first time the two have displayed their support of each other. Phelps attended the unveiling of the Ray Lewis statue outside M&T Bank Stadium in September. Phelps’ attorney Steve Allen confirmed their friendship and thanked Lewis for showing up outside the courthouse on Friday.
Per USA Today:
"“Mr. Phelps appreciated the support of Mr. Lewis by being here today. They speak frequently, and it really speaks highly of Ray Lewis that he would come here in support of his close friend.”"
Upon sentencing Phelps, the judge said the swimmer was “powerless over alcohol” and part of the sentence was for Phelps to completely abstain for the 18 month period. According to an earlier story from USA Today, Phelps has already completed a 45 day treatment for addiction and is now in an after-care program.
"“I’m finding out a lot about myself, and for this day I’m happy to be moving forward, and I’ll continue to grow from this and continue to be on my path to recovery,” Phelps said"
Ray Lewis, of course, is well-known for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstructing justice in relation to two stabbing deaths. Lewis was originally charged for murder, but those charges were dropped. So he’s exactly the guy you want in court with out, Michael Phelps.
