Cam Newton has cleared the final hurdle necessary to return to the field for the Carolina Panthers after missing last week’s game after a car crash resulted in him breaking two transverse processes in his back.

The Carolina Panthers will have their Pro Bowl quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns after Cam Newton was medically cleared and will start, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Newton was replaced by Derek Anderson in last week’s game after suffered two transverse process fractures in his back following a car crash. The injury is similar to the one Tony Romo had earlier this year when he missed one game. His mobility could be limited if the Panthers try to keep him contained in the pocket to avoid him taking any big hits as a runner, but his mobility looked good in practice, according to the Charlotte Observer.

“He did a lot of turning and twisting today. We put a lot of pressure on it,” head coach Ron Rivera said, via the Charlotte Observer. “We had him do some things on purpose, and he seemed to be right on track. He’s had no ill effects every morning.”

The Panthers need to win out and get some help to win the NFC South with their 5-8-1 record entering Sunday afternoon’s game.

Newton will wear the flak jacket he’s worn all year after suffering fractured ribs in the preseason that kept him out of the regular season opener.
