The Chicago Bears seem to be done with the Marc Trestman experiment, and Jay Cutler’s first head coach — Mike Shanahan — may be the guy who comes in and replaces him.

The Washington Redskins are going down in crash and burn style this season, with Robert Griffin III becoming a serious problem and question mark for the team. This is not only a further indictment of RGIII’s character, but a exoneration of Mike Shanahan for his benching and harsh treatment of RGIII in his final years in Washington.

With Shanahan no longer being seen as the grump old man who got fed up with his young quarterback, the NFL seems to be knocking at his door once again. Specifically, the Chicago Bears — who are set to clean house at the end of 2015 — may go hard after Mike Shanahan for one reason: Jay Cutler.

According to Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports, the Bears may use the Cutler connection to hire Mike Shanahan to replace Marc Trestman.

"With a reputation as a coach killer, finding coaches to work with Cutler may not be easy, either, but Mike Shanahan, who drafted Cutler in Denver, would have interest in reuniting with his former pupil, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, and he and Cutler maintain a very close relationship."

Shanahan and Cutler didn’t have much time together to form the tight bond the Broncos hoped for as Josh McDaniels was disastrously brought in to replace Shanahan not long after Cutler was drafted. Reuniting the two in Chicago both make sense as far as finding a head coach who will work well with Cutler and will serve as the perfect last chance for Cutler in Chicago.
