Marco Scutaro underwent the surgery in Miami, which is where he lives in the offseason, and the procedure was described as a fusion of the L2 and L3 vertebrae in his lower back. The rehab process could take four to six months and then doctors will further evaluate whether Scutaro can get back on the field and play.

"“You have to see how he responds from the surgery, and that’s months away,” Giants GM Brian Sabean said via San Jose Mercury News."

Scutaro only managed 13 plate appearances last season and was eventually replaced by infielder Joe Panik, who more or less became the Giants permanent second baseman. Scutaro ended up with Giants in 2012 just before the trade deadline on a minor deal. He ended up being a key player in the Giants 2012 World Series run, similar to how Panik was instrumental in helping the Giants get to their third title in four years.

Scutaro went 14 for 28 in the 2012 NCLS and won the MVP. His pose in the driving rain became an iconic memory for the Giants and their fans after the game. The Giants rewarded Scutaro with a three-year deal worth $20 million, but his back problems surfaced in 2013 and he only played 127 games that season, before only managing five in 2014.

Panik took over at second base later in 2014 when it became clear that Scutaro was done for the season. He played extremely well in that position for the Giants and is likely their future for quite a while there.
