Josh Smith Rumors: Dallas Mavericks May Have Interest
By Josh Hill
The Detroit Pistons waived Josh Smith on Monday morning and the rest of the NBA is now weighing their options on whether signing him is a good idea or not — specifically the Dallas Mavericks.
Last week, the Dallas Mavericks pulled off the trade no team had been able to for years, as Mark Cuban sent chump change back to Boston to acquire Rajon Rondo. That connection may now come into play for another player who is floating out there for Dallas to take a look at — Josh Smith.

The Detroit Pistons released Josh Smith on Monday afternoon, and he now has to wait 48 hours to clear waivers. With a massive contract still tied to him, the likelihood that Smith is claimed is a virtually zero, as the Philadelphia 76ers are the only team with enough cap space to claim him.
But once he clears waivers, teams like the Warriors and Rockets may come calling and that’ll be motivation for the Mavericks to take a look at him. Another reason the Mavs may look at Smith is his connection to Rajon Rondo, whom he went to high school with and has a deep connection to.
It’s unclear if that will translate on the court, but it’s worth mentioning in this grace period where all teams are candidates to sign Smith.
Houston’s interest in Josh Smith and his connection to Rondo are things that seem to suggest a move by Dallas, but as of now no one is claiming Smith off waivers with the bloated contract currently tethered to him.
