South Carolina was the home of Marcus Lattimore for three years as he burst onto the scene as a true freshman who appeared to have a bright future in front of him. Unfortunately for Lattimore, a devastating knee injury as a junior ended is NFL career before it could even begin and he retired earlier this year from the San Francisco 49ers after his body failed to recuperate enough to pursue is NFL dreams.

At the time of his retirement South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said there would always be a place for Lattimore with the Gamecocks and that’s what happened on Monday as he accepted a position as a school-slash-football program ambassador after re-enrolling at South Carolina, The State reported.

"“There’s been some back-and-forth,” Lattimore said, per The State. “I’ll most likely work with the university, coach [Ray] Tanner, president [Harris] Pastides, coach [Steve] Spurrier, whatever they need me to do. No official title that we have talked about yet, but we’re trying to get something nailed down.”"

Lattimore will enroll for the spring semester in January and plans to graduate in January of 2016 with a degree in public health.

The Duncan, South Carolina native is the program’s all-time leader in touchdowns with 41 career touchdowns (38 rushing) including 17 in his freshman season in 2010 when he led the SEC in yards from scrimmage with 1,609 and plays from scrimmage with 278. He finished his Gamecock career with 2,677 rushing yards but injuries derailed him from ever reaching those numbers again.
