Forbes released their list of the most valuable college football programs on Monday and the Texas Longhorns came in at the top spot yet again with a profit of $74 million.
The variables Forbes uses to determine value are their universities, athletic departments, conferences and local communities and is based on the 2013-2014 season.
According to Forbes, the total value of the Longhorns program is worth $131 million and their revenue is $113. Despite a $74 million profit the number was actually higher before Mack Brown’s era ended in Austin and the school hired Charlie Strong away from Louisville. The coaching transition cost $11 million.
The transition was a bit rocky initially as Texas was in heavy pursuit of Alabama head coach Nick Saban before settling on Strong who had great success with the Cardinals. Strong brought a discipline and accountability that had been lacking at the end of Brown’s era at Texas and that resulted in a number of players being dismissed from the program as he built the team in his image.
Texas started slow with a 3-5 record before rallying to finish the regular season with a 6-6 mark and earning a berth in the Texas Bowl against former SWC rival Arkansas on Dec. 29.
Recruiting is on the upswing with recent commitment from five-star linebacker Malik Jefferson and with a few more recruiting classes Texas could find themselves back at No. 1 in the college football top 25 rankings and in the top spot in the Big 12 while maintaining their overall financial value.
Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama and LSU rounded out the top five based on Forbes’ research.
