San Francisco 49ers’ GM Trent Baalke confirmed the Michigan Wolverines’ interest in head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Jim Harbaugh’s name has been thrown around in so many rumors this past season that if he were reading all of them his head would spin. He is currently expected to be fired by the San Francisco 49ers at the seasons end, and many expect his two likeliest destinations to be the Oakland Raiders or Michigan Wolverines.

At this point in time, the widespread expectation is that Harbaugh will end up accepting the Wolverines’ offer and returning to college football.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke confirmed that the Wolverines have shown interest in Harbaugh, but he once again denied that Harbaugh is going anywhere. Every single general manager has to make comments like this while the season is still going on, but it isn’t likely that there is a scenario where he would be welcomed back by the players, fans, and ownership.

Here are some of the comments that Baalke made to the media when they were asking about Harbaugh’s future.

"“I think the University of Michigan, in reaching out, did handle it correctly. As I look at it, it’s very simple. He’s the head football coach of the San Francisco 49ers. You read a lot of speculation. We heard the same thing about Texas and USC and others making overtures. He’s a good football coach. Anytime there’s a good opportunity like the University of Michigan or the University of Texas, they do that. That’s expected. You’d rather have somebody coveted than somebody who’s not.”"

Harbaugh has done an excellent job with the 49ers during his tenure there, outside of this season obviously. He has motivated the players and gotten the best out of them, but his biggest mistake according to many was making Colin Kaepernick a pocket passer.

Reports have stated that the 49ers are looking to bring in a more offensive minded head coach, and they also want a younger coach as well.

No matter what ends up happening this offseason, Harbaugh has done a great job with the 49ers and should be thanked for his work. He made some tough decision, and most of them ended up being the right ones. The reason for his firing if it does indeed happen, is due to the fact that the system needs changed to fit the players rather than him being a bad football coach.

Michigan appears to be the front-runner at this point in time, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up back in college football.
