Doug Nussmeier’s vacation from the SEC was all of one season, as the Florida Gators will name the former Alabama offensive coordinator to serve the same role under new coach Jim McElwain.

The Florida Gators reeled in Doug Nussmeier from the sinking ship that is the Michigan football program, bringing the former Wolverines offensive coordinator to Gainesville to serve the same role under new coach Jim McElwain.

Nussmeier went to Michigan after serving two seasons as the offensive mastermind behind Alabama’s attack. He was expected to bring the same style of play for the Wolverines, yet injuries and inconsistent quarterback play conspired to lead Michigan to a 5-7 record, which also led to the firing of head coach Brady Hoke on December 2.

Oddly enough, Nussmeier replaced McElwain as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator when McElwain took the job as head coach at Colorado State. The two also worked together at Michigan State, where Nussmier was quarterbacks coach and McElwain served as the associate head coach and receivers coach.

A former Division I-AA All-American quarterback at Idaho, Nussmeier is the latest hire for McElwain, who is still in the process of filling out his staff. The Gators hired Mississippi State’s Geoff Collins as the defensive coordinator shortly after bringing in McElwain on December 4.

Go figure: Christmas is approaching, and the Wolverines still have yet to resolve their head coaching vacancy, as Florida, Houston, Wisconsin, Oregon State and Colorado State have already hired new coaches. Michigan still holds on the vision of Jim Harbaugh becoming their lead man, yet with each passing day, the Wolverines continue to lose ground when it comes to recruiting.
