Rajon Rondo Wants Josh Smith To Sign With Mavericks
By Evan Massey
Dallas Mavericks point guard Rajon Rondo wants Josh Smith to join him and sign with Dallas.
Rajon Rondo was just acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in a big trade with the Boston Celtics, and he is very happy to start fresh with a new team. Mark Cuban is obviously doing everything in his power to build a championship contender this year, and this is a big step in the right direction.

Josh Smith was just released by the Detroit Pistons after a very disappointing start to the season. It wasn’t necessarily due to Smith being on the team, but he did have a tag of being a ball hog. He averaged 13.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game.
Obviously those numbers aren’t shabby at all, but he only shot 39.1 percent from the field and 24.3 percent from behind the arc. If he realized that he wasn’t a great scorer and stopped shooting as much, he probably would have been much better off. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and he was leading the Pistons in shot attempts nearly every single night.
Rondo is fairly good friends with Smith, and that is something to keep an eye on as a potential recruiting tool. Smith is also good friends with Houston Rockets’ star center Dwight Howard, and the Rockets appear to be the early front-runners to sign him. Despite that fact, Rondo talked about wanting Smith to sign with the Mavericks and make a run at a championship.
"“I think we can use an athletic big. They traded me for Brandan Wright. Besides Tyson [Chandler], our other bigs are perimeter shooters. Josh brings a lot to the game — his intangibles, he can make plays, rebound, defend. He’d be a good fit anywhere, but especially here I think he’d be a good fit.”"
Needless to say, Smith is going to have a lot of potential suitors to choose from. While he’ll have plenty of offers, they aren’t going to be for a lot of money right off the bat. He is going to have to play for a season on nearly a minimum deal and earn his money this coming offseason.
That isn’t going to be attractive to him, but that is the fact of the matter. Smith will end up signing with the team that gives him the best chance to win while still playing a large role. It will be interesting to see which teams end up being in his final choices, and who he ends up choosing to sign with next.
