Ben Zobrist appears to be the next member of the Tampa Bay Rays to depart Tropicana Field, as multiple reports indicate the former All-Star will be traded in the near future.

Ben Zobrist has been one of the more versatile and unsung performers in baseball since his breakout season with the Tampa Bay Rays during their 2008 American League title run, yet as the Rays continue their rebuilding project, Zobrist now appears to be the next to be moved.

Multiple reports suggest that “there’s a decent chance” the Rays will trade the 33-year-old Zobrist between now and Opening Day. The demand for Zobrist will be huge, as the two-time American League All-Star has hit at least .269 in six of the past seven seasons while also providing three 20-plus home run campaigns and six straight seasons of double-digit steals.

The Rays would love to keep one of their most popular players in fold, but Zobrist will become a free agent after the 2015 season and also is slated to make $7.5 million, the latter being a key reason why they’re looking to move Zobrist.

Zobrist’s versatility (he can play second, shortstop and all three outfield positions) is a big draw for teams like the Nationals, Mets, Cubs, Rangers, Reds and Giants among the probable landing spots for him.

With speculation that the Rays’ time in Tampa is winding down in the wake of the St. Petersburg City Council denying the team’s bid to search for a site for a new stadium, moving Zobrist’s salary will go a long way toward the potential sale of the team.
