NFL QB Power Rankings: Ranking The Week 17 Starters
No. 32-29
32. Logan Thomas – Arizona Cardinals – Power Ranking Score: N/A
The Cardinals have announced they are going with rookie Logan Thomas in their regular season finale. That’s probably a good idea given how poorly Ryan Lindley played last week (his accuracy percent was below 50%). I don’t know if Thomas will be any better, but at least he brings some athleticism to the position. I ranked him below Johnny Manziel because Thomas is making his first career start and he is just 1-9 on his attempts this season.
31. Johnny Manziel – Cleveland Browns – Power Ranking Score: 98.5
Johnny Football is not off to a good start to his young NFL career. In fact, as I type this there is a chance that he may not be able to go this week with a bad hamstring. It’s too early to write Manziel off, but it certainly looks like he may have been drafted too high and may be more of a developmental prospect. His Total QBR thus far is a 5.1, for comparison, Jay Cutler who has had a bad year by most standards has a 55. Let that sink in. For what it’s worth if Connor Shaw starts this weekend I would probably rank him 32nd and Thomas 31st, but at that point I’m not sure it matters.
30. Blake Bortles – Jacksonville Jaguars – Power Ranking Score: 119.2
Blake Bortles has the lowest QBR of all the QBs who have been the regular starter for most of the season. He also has the lowest Pro Football Focus grade by a sizable margin (he’s at -37 and Derek Carr is next at -26.2). The Jaguars have had another long season, but they are at least hoping the Bortles can be their long term solution at the QB position. Time will tell if their hopes are warranted.
29. Geno Smith – New York Jets – Power Ranking Score: 142.2
Has 2014 been a let down for Geno Smith? Well, the Jets tried to improve his weapons this offseason and yet in his second NFL season Smith has a lower Total QBR (29.7 to 35.9) and PFF grade (-23.5 to -17.5). Smith simply hasn’t made the progress both he and the Jets were hoping for and while he has some talent it appears that the team may look elsewhere in 2015.
