TCU coach Gary Patterson joined an elite fraternity Wednesday when he was named the AP Coach of the Year, just the second to win the award twice.

Alabama coach Nick Saban is in the College Football Playoff.

TCU coach Gary Patterson isn’t.

But the Horned Frogs’ sideline boss joined Saban in an exclusive fraternity Wednesday when he was named The Associated Press Coach of the Year.

Patterson, who also won in 2009, is just the second two-time winner of the award, joining Saban, who won it at LSU in 2003 and with Alabama in 2008.

The Horned Frogs went 11-1 and captured a share of the Big 12 title this season, finishing fifth in the race for the four College Football Playoff spots.

That came on the heels of a 4-8 season in 2013.

"“The head coaches get too much attention,” Patterson said. “That means really that you had a good team. Good players and really a great coaching staff.”"

Patterson reworked the offense after his worst season since getting the full-time coaching job at TCU in 2000, bringing in Houston’s Doug Meacham and Texas Tech‘s Sonny Cumbie as co-offensive coordinators.

Patterson is TCU’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 131-45 in 15 seasons. He broke the mark set by Dutch Meyer, who won 109 games from 1934-52.

The Horned Frogs will play Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31—one of the so-called New Year’s Six bowls that will rotate the College Football Playoff semifinal games. This year, those games are at the Rose and Sugar bowls.

Urban Meyer of Ohio State was second in the voting by a 27-14 margin.

Other coaches receiving votes were Dan Mullen of Mississippi State, Rich Rodriguez of Arizona, Saban, Art Briles of Baylor, Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and Justin Fuente of Memphis.
