The Dallas Cowboys already porous defense will be without Rolando McClain this week as they travel to Washington for an NFC East battle with the Redskins, according to the Cowboys’ website. McClain has been a stalwart for the Cowboys this season and a Comeback Player of the Year candidate after being coaxed out of his second retirement. McClain is also second on the team in tackles this year.
McClain was a full participant Thursday and Friday in practice so the illness must have sort of crept up on him. At any rate with the NFC East wrapped up and a first round bye a super long shot for the Cowboys it might be a good plan to let McClain take a week off and recoup and prepare for the first round of the playoffs anyway.
McClain has a team-leading 108 tackles by coaches’ stats this season, including nine tackles for loss, one sack and five quarterback pressures. He also has a forced fumble and has two interceptions. He will be sorely missed, but the Cowboys will likely look to rookie Anthony Hitchens to get the start at middle linebacker.
