Dallas Cowboys’ running back DeMarco Murray is humbled to be approaching Emmitt Smith’s rushing record.

Emmitt Smith is without a doubt one of the greatest running backs to ever play in the NFL, and he currently holds the Dallas Cowboys’ single-season rushing record. DeMarco Murray is closing in on that gap this year, and is humbled to be approaching Smith’s record. Smith racked up 1,773 yards on the ground during the 1995 season, while Murray has 1,745 yards this year with just one game remaining.

Obviously Murray is expected to pass the record this week against the Washington Redskins, but is going about it with respect. He talked to the media about potentially breaking Smith’s record this week, and answered the question extremely well.

"“It’s definitely a humbling experience. I think we all have a piece of that in the O-line, coaches, receivers, tight ends, fullbacks, and think we all have a piece of that and whenever you get to have the chance to do something special like that, you want to share it and share it with the guys on this team and the people in this organization. So it definitely will mean a lot to us.”"
"“Obviously he’s the best running back to play in the league and records are meant to be broken. And I’m sure this one will be broken sometime soon, whoever else comes along. That’s what they’re for and you’ve got to cherish the moment and move on and really know what’s important and that’s obviously winning games.”"

He is 100 percent correct on that answer, and is still more focused on helping take the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl this season. This is the first year in quite some time that Dallas has actually looked like a legitimate playoff contender. Murray has been the biggest reason for the successful season, and has taken a ton of pressure off of Tony Romo’s shoulders.

All of that being said, the record is something that will mean a lot to him assuming he is able to break it on Sunday. He has worked hard all season long to get to this point, and now he is just 28 yards away from getting there.

Sunday will be a big historical mark in the Cowboys’ franchise history, but Smith will still be considered the greatest running back to ever play with the Cowboys for now.
