New York Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak heads to injured reserve in the midst of a fantastic NHL season.

Fans of the New York Islanders have been waiting for that proverbial other shoe to drop.  After such a strong start to the season, 23-11-0, how could fans think otherwise given the recent history of this franchise?  Today, it’s been confirmed that starting goalie Haroslav Halak will be heading to injured reserve.

The franchise announced the news on Saturday:

Halak appears to have been bothered by the injury for quite some time now.  He sat out of practice last Tuesday for a maintenance day, and didn’t start against the Montreal Canadiens that very same night as they lost 3-1.

The 29-year old has also dealt with numerous injuries during his nine year NHL career.

24-year old Kevin Poulin will now be called up to take his spot, and will share time with Chad Johnson between the crease.  Poulin currently sports a 9-6-4 record, .924 save percentage and 2.54 goals-against average in 19 games for the Sound Tigers, (Isles affiliate) this season. He has made at least five appearances for the big club in the last four years and will make the start tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.

New York continues it’s chase to catch the division leading Penguins in the Metropolitan division, who are currently up three points.
