Maxx Williams, a guy some compare to a Jason Witten or even Rob Gronkowski, is planning to declare for the 2015 NFL draft after the new year, according to 1500 ESPN. Williams has been in school for three years now and is a redshirt sophomore.
He and his family are reportedly deep into their search for an agent to represent him. The 2015 draft is not expected to be a strong one for tight ends, so Williams likely sees a good chance to go in the first or second round.
"Over 11 games this season, Williams recorded team highs in receptions (29), receiving yards (471) and receiving touchdowns (7).The 6-foot-4, 250-pound redshirt sophomore earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and was a finalist for the Mackey Award given to the nation’s top tight end. (via SI.com)"
Williams wasn’t necessarily a mainstay of the highlight reel, but his size should make him immediately ready to play in the NFL, and he is considered a good blocker as well. Williams is also the son of former NFL center Brian Williams. If he decides at the last minute not to declare, he was named a captain for Minnesota in 2015.
Williams has reportedly submitted his name to the NFL Draft Advisory Board and is expected to declare after his Minnesota team faces Missouri in the Citrus Bowl on January 1, 2015.
