Adam Vinatieri, kicker for the Indianapolis Colts, missed a 46-yard field goal to ruin his perfect season.

Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has long been one of the best legs in the NFL, though he has never had a perfect season.

Such was on the line this afternoon as Vinatieri had converted on all 28 of his field goal attempts (in addition to his 47 extra points). All he had to do was knock down the likely two or three attempts he’d be given and he’d etch himself into NFL history.

The only problem? He choked.

With a 46-yard field goal separating Adam Vinatieri from NFL immortality (at least from a kicker standpoint), the Pro Bowl talent hooked his boot and it ended up missing the post by about five feet.

Not long after, Adam Vinatieri successfully converted another field goal but it was too late – the missed kick will leave him with an imperfect season.

Of course, converting on 29 of 30 field goals is no small task and the Indianapolis Colts kicker should be applauded for such a wonderful campaign, though you have to assume the veteran is quite upset with himself considering what was personally on the line.

Vinatieri has converted nearly 84 percent of his field goals during the span of his career and it’s a much improved number if you take away his first few seasons which were sub par by his current standards.

Hopefully he’ll stick around for another season or two and have yet another opportunity to accomplish such a rare task.
