As the Chicago Cubs continue a busy MLB off-season, they are reportedly looking to add a veteran leader to their team. Jonny Gomes and Nick Swisher are rumored to be potential targets for that role.

The value of a good clubhouse guy is hard to measure. It seems especially hard for those of us on the outside, as we might be inclined to overvalue or undervalue leadership depending on how it fits the narrative around the team in question.

For the Chicago Cubs, a team that will enter 2015 with high expectations and a lineup built around a core of young players, it might be especially valuable to add one of those guys who are known for their presence in the locker room. As such, the team is rumored to be interested in a couple of the best known “good clubhouse guys” in baseball.

According to Nick Cafardo, the Cubs might be a fit for a trade for Nick Swisher or to sign Jonny Gomes. On Swisher, Cafardo writes:

"The Indians would like to trade him because they acquired Brandon Moss from Oakland. Tampa Bay, Toronto, Baltimore, San Diego, Milwaukee, and the Cubs (who would love to add a veteran leader), could be possible trade partners."

As for Gomes, that might be the more likely fit:

"Gomes could wind up with Jon Lester and David Ross with the Cubs to add some veteran presence to a young outfield. It’s been slow going in the reserve outfield market. “He’s still an effective player. He works for a team that’s on the verge and on a team like the Cubs or Astros who need a veteran presence,” said one National League GM."

Between the connections with former Red Sox players and the fact that he would come cheaper, it seems like all signs point to Gomes for the Cubs. Never has a career .244/.335/.442 hitter been seen as more valuable.
