K.J. McDaniels wasn’t a lottery pick in this spring’s NBA Draft, but he’s playing defense like he was one and he embarrassed a player who was actually taken there.

When Dante Exum was drafted in the lottery of the NBA Draft, there was a lot of hype about him being the next big thing in basketball. The Australian sensation was a true wild card but there was — and still is — so much upside that the Utah Jazz still have high hopes for what kind of player he will become.

A full round later, Clemson K.J. McDaniels was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers and so far his season has gone better than most rookies drafted before him. One of those rookies is Exum and when the two met on Saturday night, it wasn’t a pretty sight for the point guard.

McDaniels made the rounds earlier in the week when he swatted the living daylights out of a shot and knocked the ball way into the crowd. He had another block on Saturday night, and while it didn’t travel into the stands, it destroyed Dante Exum’s confidence for the night.

There were some who said McDaniels would be the sleeper steal of the draft, and so far he’s living up to that notion. He’s not the best rookie of his class, but he’s proving that he was worth a lot higher pic than a second rounder and is probably the best 76ers rookie taken in this year’s draft.
