With reports that Jim Harbaugh will be the next head coach at Michigan, Ohio State players are excited about the challenge that could present.

Multiple reports have San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh returning to his alma mater to take the vacant head coaching job at Michigan … and Ohio State’s players couldn’t be happier.

"“I hope that he can bring them back to (being) a really prominent program,” Buckeyes offensive tackle Taylor Decker told USA Today. “That’s just good for our conference and that’s fun for our rivalry. I hope he does end up going there and making them a good team again because that’s a fun finale to play in.”"

The last time the game had real national implications was when it was No. 1 vs. No. 2 at Columbus in 2006.

Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke combined for one win in their seven combined years in the rivalry and the Wolverines failed to reach a bowl game in three of the last seven seasons.

"“It’d be great,” Ohio State receiver Evan Spencer said. “They’re two really intense coaches (referring to Harbaugh and Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer). … At the end of the day, I know Coach Meyer and I know he’s going to do everything he can to beat ‘em up pretty much as bad as we can every time we play them.”"

Harbaugh was 2-0 as Michigan’s quarterback against the Buckeyes, leading the Wolverines to wins in 1985 and 1986.

As a head coach, Harbaugh was 29-6 in three seasons at FCS San Diego, 29-21 in four seasons at Stanford, including 20-6 his final two years there, and is 43-19-1 with the 49ers in the regular season and 5-3 in the postseason in four years in San Francisco.

However, the truth of the matter is that the Big Ten is better as a whole with a relevant Michigan, the winningest program in the country.
