5. Mike Shanahan

Mike Shanahan last coached with the Washington Redskins, and unfortunately that situation did not end all that well. He wasn’t able to bring success to the Redskins outside of one playoff appearance, and simply wasn’t capable of working with the roster and improving it.

One has to ask whether or not Shanahan would have the energy to survive another head coaching job in the NFL, but at 63 years old he is still very much involved in the game. He isn’t the “young” type of coach that the 49ers are said to be looking for, but he is the type of coach that could help take them back to Super Bowl contention.

He has a career coaching record of 170-138, and was the head coach for the Denver Broncos back in their glory days with John Elway late in his career. San Francisco could use his stern locker room voice, and he might be a perfect hire for them. That being said, he is aging and there is no telling how many more years he’ll be around to coach.

This would be the move for them to make if they are looking to bring in a coach for a few seasons to get back into Super Bowl contention, but he is not even close to a long-term option.
